Follow the Money: Brownback Donors Give Big to Colyer and Kobach
Former Brownback Donors Gave Nearly $300,000 to Kobach and Colyer.
Topeka, KS – This week, we finally got a look at the finance reports for Kansas Republicans running to replace Gov. Sam Brownback. And based on the flow of money, it looks like the Brownback legacy is being carried on by Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer and Sec. of State Kris Kobach.
Based on the reports, former Brownback donors gave just under $300,000 to Colyer and Kobach for their campaigns. The overlapping donors even include a former Brownback Chief of Staff and huge corporations like Exxon Mobil.
And when you look at their policy positions compared to Brownback’s, it makes sense that they are supported by all the same people. Colyer has long been described as a “Brownback loyalist,” who gave his “full support” when Brownback enacted his disastrous tax plan. And even after their policies crushed Kansas’ economy, Colyer said the plan “was not a mistake.” Kobach is no different. He has repeatedly criticized the legislature’s decision to repeal Brownback’s tax package. He actually wanted to cut even more public services, regardless of adverse effects on students, teachers, health care workers, and small businesses.
“It’s no surprise Brownback donors are giving big money to Jeff Colyer and Kris Kobach,” said Ethan Corson, Executive Director of the Kansas Democratic Party. “Both Colyer and Kobach remain committed to the policies that completely decimated Kansas’ economy. Kansas voters should follow the money and they’ll realize that Colyer and Kobach are a couple of Brownback clones running for a third term of his failed agenda.”
