A Message to Kansans
Topeka, Kansas – Democratic leaders have a message for the people of Kansas: “It’s time to move past Brownback’s failed experiment and chart a new course.”
Our party has watched while Sam Brownback and his radical conservative allies have recklessly mismanaged our state’s budget resulting in month after month of revenue shortfalls, draconian budget cuts, and incalculable damage to our state’s economy. The Kansas Democratic Party is committed to the task of repairing this damage and restoring fiscal sanity to our state’s budget.
The task in question is a daunting task. Brownback’s remarkable failure to mention his proposed budget, the fiscal crisis and low growth economy his policies have produced in his state of the state speech is powerful evidence of his inability to publicly defend the indefensible.
In contrast, Democratic Legislators are proposing to address the fiscal crisis and stimulate the state’s stagnant economy by revisiting the issue of exempting 330,000 affluent businesses from state income tax liability, by adequately funding public education, by investing in our state’s infrastructure, by addressing the issue of sales tax on food (one of the highest in the country), requiring state contractors to hire 70 percent of their employees from within Kansas, by requiring state contractors to pay a livable wage, by increasing the state’s minimum wage, and by expanding Medicaid.
